If you are recently engaged…congrats! There is so much excitement that comes with being engaged, as well as a very long to-do list. After calling all of your family & friends and changing your FB status, the planning officially begins. One of the very first things that Jack and I did was book our engagement shoot. We probably did this way too prematurely, but our timing ended up being perfect with our overall plan. However, engagement shoots are not for everyone, so don’t feel like it’s something you have to do. There are a lot of unforeseen factors that go into planning and booking your shoot that we quickly uncovered and had to face head on. If you are at the stage where you are thinking about booking an engagement shoot but can’t decide, this post is for you.
Reasons Why You Should Book An Engagement Shoot:
There are many reasons as to why you should book an engagement shoot. One of the main ones being, well, you’re engaged! Also, professional engagement photos make for great “Save the Dates” down the road. Unless your S.O. hired a professional photographer during the proposal, I highly recommend setting some money & time aside for an engagement shoot. For starters, it’s fun. Granted, your S.O. might hate taking pictures in general (cough* cough* Jack), but it’s really hard to hate it when you’re laughing, dancing and smiling with your best friend. Taking professional photos also sets the mood for the rest of wedding planning. Sure, booking a venue, confirming your bridal/groomsmen parties, and hiring a wedding planner all make it feel real too. Booking an engagement shoot is a great compliment to all the wedding planning you will do. Meaning, it’s a great way to test out a photographer before officially booking them for your big day. Not only do you get to know his/her shooting style, they get to know you as a couple and what your style of photos are and what you like (or dislike) come wedding day. Reasons Why You Should Not Book An Engagement Shoot:
With every yes, there is a no. That being said, there are also a few reasons why an engagement shoot may not be for you. The first would be the obvious – if your S.O. hired a professional engagement photographer for your proposal, is it worth the money to spend for a second “styled” engagement shoot? Think about it. Also, it’s not cheap. Engagement shoots can easily range from $400-$800 for a 2-hour session. You may get a better rate if you book your photographer for your wedding and engagement shoot at the same time…however, you will likely need to have a lot of wedding details planned before that (venue, wedding date, budget, etc). Third, you may not need it! If you already know that “Save the Dates” are not your style, then you may not need professional photos. Or, you may already photos of you and your S.O. that you love and want to use instead. Lastly, picture taking just may not be for you. For some, the thought of taking pictures is actually nauseating. I have friends who never want to step foot in front of the camera, and would still feel this way even on their wedding day! In the end, it really depends on you and your S.O.’s preference.
